PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY

What is Photodynamic therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy refers to a combination therapy, a photosensitizing agent along with pulse light treatment that results in a synergistic effect on the skin.

A company called Dusa pharmaceuticals came up with a substance which they call Levulan. Levulan is a photosensitizing agent that when applied to the skin, makes it extremely sensitive to light for about 24 hours. Laser and intense pulse light treatments are just that, light. Therefore, when Levulan and laser/intense pulse light are used in combination, it tremendously increases the effectiveness of the treatment.

What types of treatments are beneficial with Photodynamic therapy?
Acne – great benefit has been seen with reduction of acne in combination with a laser/IPL that treats acne. Patients have seen both reduction of breakouts and decrease of intensity of breakouts.

Photofacials – This tremendously increases the effectiveness of a regular photofacial to have the benefits in a much shorter period. Great for reduction of Rosacea, sun damaged skin, broken blood vessels, age spots, as well as redness and flushing

How many treatments are needed?
Typically, we recommend a series of 2-3 treatments, but patients start experiencing the great effects in as short as 1 treatment.
